Getting older can be hard, for the individual, spouse, and close family members who feel responsible for stepping in to pick up the slack. However, Jojo Youngs, owner of Kailua-based Senior Options, also knows that providing comfort, care and assistance in a loving way can make the golden years truly golden – for everyone involved! “My philosophy is to make good memories today,” says Jojo, “because today is really all we have.” Raised in Kailua, Jojo worked at a retirement center for 11 years, where she witnessed how upsetting it can be to move an aging person into an unfamiliar environment. She saw the struggles and guilt that family members dealt with knowing they could no longer provide the care necessary to keep their loved ones at home. She wanted to provide another option, so in 2002, with the encouragement of Mr. Bill Brown, her first client, she started Senior Options. "We are an ohana-style service that takes care of individuals and couples in their homes,” she says. “We work with the family to create a custom plan that fits their specific needs. We strive to keep our kupuna as independent as possible for as long as we can. As they decline, we gently adjust our care to meet their changing needs.” Jojo and her team encourage people to seek out options early. Offering free consultations, they give families information and talk them through all of their options. The team offers every level of service, including personal care, cooking, transportation, and 24-hour care. “At Senior Options, it’s our goal to keep clients safe and well cared for in their own homes,” says Jojo. “We treat everyone with the same compassion and dignity we give to our own parents.”
